Moussan

Moussan is a village some 5kms to the North West of Narbonne in the Aude department of the Languedoc region of Southern France. It's vineyards lie on the borders of the Corbieres and Minervois wine areas. Where as many villages in the area are dissected by a mainroad, Moussan seems to sit in the centre of a triangle of main roads, the nearest of which passes 2Km or so to the South. Moussan itself was once a fortified village as evidenced by the fact that the old village is arranged within a circle of outbuildings which open up onto the Boulevard des Remparts.

The picture above was taken looking towards the village from near the Complex de 4 Chemins.

The picture below is of Rue Haute, one of the narrow streets in the 'inner circle'.

Moussan has a population of about 1,100 people, a few shops selling food, a bar and a restaurant. It also has it's own Cave Co-operative, where the locally grown grapes are turned into wine.

The village school in Moussan, once maintained a very nice internet site. Unfortunately this seems to have disappeared from the web. I will keep my eyes open and re-instate a link, should it re-appear. In particular there was a lovely photo of the nearby chapel of St. Laurent, set among the vineyards and powdered with fresh snow.

On the Tassin map of the Narbonne area made in 1638, there is a village shown called Moufsac, which based on it's positioning, I would assume is Moussan.

If you have Google Earth installed on your computer try clicking HERE (if you don't have it you can download it free from http://earth.google.com/ ). On my computer it renames the file to Moussan.zip - which it isn't. If this happens, instead of clicking [open], [save] it to your hard drive with the extension changed so it reads Moussan.kmz not Moussan.zip - Now when it asks you if you want to [open] it, do so, or open it in Windows Explorer. You should find that Google Earth will open and automatically transport you to Moussan. It works on my PC anyway (I'm using Windows XP Home Edition SP2).
