WIVELISCOMBE I was prompted to create this page, because I came across an old news paper for sale on eBay, called the Illustrated Times, which had information about a murder, which took place in Wiveliscombe in presumably December 1856, and I thought it would be worth preserving for posterity on the internet. In summary Thomas Nation was committed for trial accused of the murder of John Aplin. The reason I was interested in this article was because I lived in Wiveliscombe for 18 months in 1966/7.
When I lived in Wiveliscombe, we stayed in North street, just a couple of doors along from the White Hart mentioned in the article. As kids just entering our teens we used to chain smoke cigarettes, nearby, in what we knew as "Cut Throat lane". I never knew how the lane got it's name. May be this was it, although I doubt it, given that the deceased was found it Grant's lane. It would seem that throat slitting may have been quite a common occurrence in these parts.
