national best-sellers AND sold a million! This single was their biggest
seller in US.

This album was the Carpenters' true moment of arrival,
ultimately selling nearly 5 million copies to achieve multiplatinium
sales status, contributing to six Grammy nominations, including the
categories Record of the Year (for "CLOSE TO YOU" single) and the
Album of the Year (for LP of that title).
Richard and Karen won Grammy Awards as Best New Artist and Best Contemporary
Vocal Group.
RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS

In late 1971, upon its release, this single became
a prerennial radio play and remains to this day one of the Carpenters'
most popular tracks. Though it was held off the number-one spot by
Carole King's "Its too late", it became Richard and Karen's fourth
million seller.

and within 2 months, at the start of a new decade, became their third
