Within weeks of its release, the single had sold 300,000 copies and by 22 July 1970, it had reached the top of the national best-sellers AND sold a million! This single was their biggest seller in US.


CLOSE TO YOU

This album was the Carpenters' true moment of arrival, ultimately selling nearly 5 million copies to achieve multiplatinium sales status, contributing to six Grammy nominations, including the categories Record of the Year (for "CLOSE TO YOU" single) and the Album of the Year (for LP of that title).
Richard and Karen won Grammy Awards as Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Vocal Group.



RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS
single

In late 1971, upon its release, this single became a prerennial radio play and remains to this day one of the Carpenters' most popular tracks. Though it was held off the number-one spot by Carole King's "Its too late", it became Richard and Karen's fourth million seller.

This album continued their march to the top, going gold and winning a 1971 Grammy award plus three nominations.


SING

This lightweight "SING", a trite sing-along from the TV series "Sesame Street", complete with children chorus, returned them to their million-selling status and won two Grammy nominations.

This album sold a million copies very quickly in the United States and send their already strong popularity soaring in Japan.

WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN
single

Released a mere three months after "Close to you", "We've only just begun" roared to the top as the Carpenters' second consecutive smash and was a gold record soon afterward. A hundred and fifty artists were to record it eventually, Karen and Richard's would remain the classic version and their signature song.








FOR ALL WE KNOW

By early January 1971 this single was released and within 2 months, at the start of a new decade, became their third gold, million-selling single.








SUPERSTAR

Release on 12 August 1971, it helped the Carpenters to secure a gold record within eight weeks.




GOODBYE TO LOVE

Was number Seven on the National Charts.


YESTERDAY ONCE MORE
single

In 1973, this single sold an astounding 750,000 copies. This single was their biggest seller in Japan and Britain.



TOP OF THE WORLD
single

In late 1973, this released single went to the top of the charts, becoming the Carpenters' second number one (After CLOSE TO YOU). In Britain, where it went to number five, the song remains one of their most popular radio plays.
