Karen Carpenter's Legendary Long Lost 1979 Solo Album
Unveiled By A&M Records Inc. Press Dept - October 8, 1996

LOS ANGELES - Sixteen years after it's initial intended release date, A&M will debut the classic KAREN CARPENTER from Karen Carpenter's only solo recording session. The experimental, self-titled album features 12 poignant tracks produced by Phil Ramone (Billy Joel, Paul Simon.)

The idea for the album came when Richard Carpenter decided it was time for the Carpenters' to take their first break since signing to A&M ten years prior. With the hiatus in the Spring of 1979, Karen went into the studio to expand her vocal style.

"I have not re-mixed or done anything to the tapes.
These mixes, the material and style are the way Karen approved them,"

explained Phil Ramone.

During the session she recorded three sign-of-the-times disco tunes including "My Body Keeps Changing My Mind"; the rarely-covered Paul Simon classic "Still Crazy After All These Years"; and a country ballad "All Because Of You." Ramone also brought Peter Cetera who wrote "Making Love In The Afternoon" and Rod Temperton (Michael Jackson) who penned the pop/disco song "Lovelines" and the exquisite ballad "If We Try."

In the decade between the Carpenters' debut in 1969 through 1979, they had:
  • recorded nine albums,
  • starred in four network TV specials,
  • headlined countless worldwide tours,
  • assembled a string of 16 consecutive Top 20 hits and had
  • become the number one selling American Pop act of the seventies (selling more records worldwide than any other American group, just behind Elton John, Paul Mcartney, and the Bee Gees).
Richard Carpenter reflects on the album saying,

"Karen was a great artist (and) this album repesents
a period of time and change of approach in her career.
As such it deserves to be heard-in its entirety, as originally intended."
