Climate plays an important role in growing conditions which cactus demand. Some cactus requires warm and moist climate whereas certain species require hot and dry environment. Although Cacti are highly adaptable plants, an inadequate atmosphere will promote an unnatural growth cycle that results in the formation of soft and weakly spined tissues. Furthermore, sufficient moisture is required to keep its tissues turgid and healthy. Young cactus will require an atmosphere of slightly warmer than old cactus.

Outdoors cactus in the garden is advised to be cultivated under shelter. This is to protect the plant from direct rain or at worst, hail. Greenhouse is the most favourable place for cactus growing but not necessary in Tropical/Equatorial places. However, a green house will definitely boast the growing speed of the plant.

Cactus should be exposed to sunshine. Not directly under sun’s ray but bright spots with shade or semi-shade depending to the species. There is no fix period of how long they should be left out to receive sunshine. But too many hours of sunshine is unhealthy for cacti if they are subjected to more than 12 hours of sunshine.

Per day temperatures of over 30°C (86°F) in shade and minimum night temperatures of over 20°C (68°F) is encouraged, or they may enter a semi-dormant state.

In hot weather, it is advisable to remove the cactus from noon sun. This also applies to those species that normally like sunny position.
