HELPFUL TIPS FOR YOUR WINDOWS
A
useful feature which IE4 & IE5 users should love. You're accustomed to
viewing files in Explorer windows with these options: Web Page, Large Icons,
Small Icons, List, or Details. While the Web Page view is great for previewing
documents one at a time, there's a way to preview everything at once.
Right-click on a folder and select 'Properties,' at the bottom of the dialog box
you should see the option to 'Enable thumbnail view.' Place a checkmark in that
box. The next time you're in that folder and you change its view, you'll see the
'Thumbnail' option. All graphics, Web pages, and (possibly) documents will be
previewed directly within that Explorer window.
Here's an electric time shaver: if you want to select multiple programs on the Taskbar (to close them all at once, maximize them, etc.), depress CTRL while you left-click each button. When you've finished, right-click on one of your Taskbar selections and select your action (it'll happen to every chosen program). NOTE: you can reverse an accidental selection by clicking on a selected item.
"Aren't
You A Little Short For A Shortcut" A finger on a hot key or two. "If
you don't use the number keys on the numeric keypad, you can use them as
single-click keyboard shortcuts for launching your 10 favorite apps. Start by
turning on the NumLock key. Then, right-click on an existing program shortcut
and choose its Properties. In the Shortcut tab, select the 'Shortcut key' field,
press the number key (on your number pad) that you want to associate with the
program, then click 'OK.' Repeat the steps for each app's respective shortcut.
Now, you'll need to keep these shortcuts on your Desktop, or in your Windows
folder. With NumLock on, you'll be one key away from your favorite program.
Coming
from the "Look What the Mouse Dragged In" shows us how to
sprinkle more stuff on our Desktops. You can easily detach a toolbar (including
the 'Quick Launch' bar) from your Taskbar and make it a floating object.
Consider doing this if your Taskbar is constantly crammed full of programs. To
show you how it's done, grab the handle on the left side of the Quick Launch bar
and drag it to the middle of your Desktop (then let go). BIMP! A nice,
configurable window filled with some shortcuts. Remember, to create a new
toolbar, right-click on your Taskbar, select 'Toolbars,' then 'New Toolbar.' No
need to show an ID for these bars.
Did you
ever try to drag & drop stuff in DOS? It was impossible. Then again, we
didn't really use the mouse back then. To move an icon across the Desktop, we
click on it to select it, drag it, then drop it elsewhere. That's pretty much
what you're supposed to do in Windows. So, how else can you take the 'drag' out
of redundant steps? You can drag & drop shortcuts into the open 'Run' dialog
to view their path and file extension, or drag & drop files into folders. My
favorite: select some text in your browser, then drag & drop it into a new
e-mail message (or document). No need to use the clipboard -- the text should
automatically be copied!
The
mouse is an awesome tool for moving your pointer from one side of the screen to
the other, but when it comes to manipulating layout in a Microsoft Word
document, it fails miserably without a snap-to grid. That's where the nudge
command comes into play; put things exactly where you'd like them to be. First,
select the object; from the Drawing toolbar, choose Draw, then Nudge. Now you
can move that sucker in any desired direction. Don't continue to overcompensate
with your mouse; I just wish that more object-oriented programs had this kind of
option.
Can you
see what isn't there? Well, when it comes to IE5: yes. By default, however, it
isn't easy to do. Unless you're on a mega-fast connection, it'll take a while
for graphically-intense Web pages to fully load. But, should you have to stare
at a blank page while they're downloading? In the Control Panel, open the
'Internet Options' applet. Select the 'Advanced' tab and find the 'Mutlimedia'
section. Is there a checkmark in the 'Show Image Download Placeholders' box? Put
one there; now, before images completely load, you'll be able to see their sizes
instantaneously
