Books

I've never attended any photography course. The course fees are just too expensive.

Books are not that cheap too. I've paid S$60 for my first photography book. And most photography books are in the region of S$40-S$50. But you can always borrow the books from the library for free!

Understanding Exposure
by Bryan Peterson

Bryan expalins in a clear, detailed and interesting way about shutter speed, apeture and film speed.
You have my full endorsement for this book! Period.
This book is also available in CD Rom version. You can change the exposure settings and see the effects and changes on screen.

Learning to See Creatively
by Bryan Peterson

Another great book. This book teaches you to recognize and avoid visual prejudices that lead to dull, uninventive photographs. There are many paired examples of an ordinary shot and a more creative shot. He would explain in detail how he go about getting the creative shot.Very interesting and inspiring!

Mountain Light
by Galen Rowell

This is not a how-to book.
But this book is so inspiring and after reading, I nearly packed up for a trip to the mountain highlands after reading.
Photographs are gorgeous and Galen writes well too. Galen relates his adventure behind each photograph. Chapter 6 was an interesting article about Galen going on an assignment for National Geographic.
You may borrow from the library or like me, order from Amazon.

The Art of Adventure Photography
by Galen Rowell

Collection of his monthly column in Outdoor Photography magazine. Beautifully written and inspiring.
Can't find any in the library or local bookstores. Try ordering from MPH.

Book Stores

Borders has a good stock of book on photography.

National Library

Yes! The libraries have many good photography books. You can borrow up to as many as 4 books at any one time! There are no membership nor rental fees at all! Simply produce your IC.
As for foreigners with long term passes, it's $10 per year. Just bring along your passport. For those without, you can still read the books in the library.
